Former Sinopec president gets life term in prison

Petroleumworld.com 01 24 2017

A Chinese court has jailed Wang Tianpu, the former president of Sinopec Group, to life in prison for graft, state television said on Tuesday citing a court verdict.

Sinopec Group is the parent of oil major Sinopec Corp, reports Reuters.

The court has sentenced the official to 15 and a half years in prison for corruption involving millions of dollars, judicial sources said.

The court verdict was issued Monday against Su Rong, 66, who was expelled from the ruling Communist Party last year for his role in a series of bribery scandals.

Judicial sources said that Su was also deprived of his political rights for life and he had given up all his personal assets.

According to the statement, Su accepted 116 million yuan ($16.9 million) in bribes between 2002 and 2014 and possessed more than 80 million additional yuan of unknown provenance.

The official Xinhua news agency said in announcing his expulsion from the Communist Party last February that Su was "one of the graft 'tigers.

Some Chinese media reports had earlier linked Su to corrupt land deals in Jiangxi Province during his time as party secretary there.

Su is the latest high-profile convict in President Xi Jinping's crackdown on graft.
