French
group Total promises 2 million dollars aid to Myanmar
PARIS
Petroleumworld.com, May 9, 2008
French oil giant Total, which has been accused of
backing Myanmar's military regime, said Friday it would donate two million dollars
(1.3 million euros) to help cyclone victims in the reclusive state.
Total, which employs 300 people in Myanmar, said on its website its donation
was in response to an appeal by the international Red Cross.
The cyclone has, according to US officials, have killed around 100,000 people
and survivors face serious health worries, with everything from disease to snake
bites putting some 1.5 million people at risk, aid groups say.
