Latin American leaders will meet in Guyana Friday for a Rio Group
summit to discuss social issues facing the region including rampant
poverty, Guyanese Foreign Minister Rudy Insanally said Saturday.
Presidents Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of
Brazil, Michele Bachelet of Chile, Nicanor Duarte Frutos of Paraguay
and Rafael Correa of Ecuador have confirmed their attendance, Insanally
said.
"Their aim is to see whether they can come together with some
initiatives to address social issues," Insanally told AFP.
The summit opens Friday with a speeches by Guyanese President Bharrat
Jagdeo and the representative of the Rio Group's current presidency,
Argentina. A full working session will be held Saturday.
Guyana is the first English-speaking Caribbean country to host a summit
of the Rio Group, a Latin American forum created in 1986 to widen
political cooperation in the region.
