Subject: Response to Mark Weisbrot
Dear friends,
Attached*
is a paper that you may find of interest. It is a response
to
Mark Weisbrot, who recently published
a paper on the CEPR
web site taking issue with a number of statements made in my
March/April
Foreign Affairs article. As I show in the attached
paper, Weisbrot’s conclusions are reached by citing severely
distorted data and systematically misinterpreting the existing
evidence. Weisbrot’s distortions include using estimates
of social spending that are inflated by the inclusion of regressive
expenditures such as large infrastructure projects and military
spending, presenting inequality figures in which the poorest
households are excluded from the calculation, and citing econometric
estimates which show the exact opposite of what he is arguing
for.
Feel free
to forward this paper to those who you think may have interest
in it, and please don’t hesitate to contact me
if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
Regards,
Francisco Rodriguez
